PSTN Switch Off

What Is the PSTN Switch Off?

In 2017, Openreach announced that in 2025 they are to switch off the old analogue PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) which has been in service since 1876. This means the landline of any home or business phone that operates on the old analogue phone network will be switched off. This also relates to anything else relying on copper lines such as FTTC and ADSL broadband, alarms, door entry systems, card machines, and EPOS. Everyone using PSTN copper-based services must move to an alternate (VoIP) service before then.

What are the benefits of a VoIP system:

  1. VoIP systems can handle dozens (or hundreds) of calls on one high-speed connection
  2. Telephone numbers are easily portable and not attached to local exchanges.
  3. Adding and removing extensions, numbers and users is simple.
  4. VoIP systems support an array of communication tools, not just voice calls.
  5. VoIP offers significant potential cost savings vs PSTN.
